I'm getting Married!

Today, is somewhat of a personal post. We have some very exciting news over at BWHQ and it is that, well...

I'm getting married!

Now, those of you who know me personally will already know that Bliss Weddings wasn't started on the back of planning my own Wedding; it simply was for my love of all things Wedding. I already get super excited about the word Wedding and everything which goes with it. But now, there is something a little bit more special about the word for me.

Me and Mr Bliss Weddings have been together for almost 8 years now and no, he hasn't just popped the question. The rather huge and gorgeous engagement ring has been sat there for quite some time now (4.5 years to be precise) and it is only now that we have finally decided to tie the knot. If i am being honest, working as Bliss Weddings for the last two years watching so many people get married and help so many other couples, has been hard for me. Whilst it is and always will be the most amazing thing to be a part of, there has been nothing i have wanted more than to get married.

I know he will cringe when he reads this but he is just the most wonderful person. In 8 years we have done a lot together, he is a few years older than me and he has waited for me to 'catch up' in my life and to do everything i have needed to do. He took me abroad for the first time, he was with me when i passed my driving test, he was with me when i failed my A'Level's and then when i passed them finally, he introduced me to my old chum Vodka Lime and Lemonade and he has been there when i have needed him the most. He has been the one to screech round the living room with me when i got my first Wedding, he has been the one to look after me when i have not stopped for 7 days and i can't function, he has been the one who has picked me up when it all feels to much and more importantly he has supported me 100% every step of the way.
So, it is for these reasons that i said Yes 4.5 years ago and also why i will say I Do in 2 years time.

So, to everyone who has asked me the question...Kate when are you getting married? Now i can say soon!

Finally, the Wedding Planner will be the Bride! Probably not until the beginning of 2014 but i can cope with being a Bride for that long...just about anway.

What's more I will now know exactly what it is like to be a Bride, so i will understand everything from this side of the fence too. I will be blogging about my journey, just to make everything a little more interesting and also so i can have some advice from fellow Brides!

North West Wedding Venues: The Midland Hotel, Manchester

The Midland Hotel in Manchester City Centre is one of the most iconic buildings within the city. Having visited there myself very recently it is sure to say that if you are looking for a wedding venue with a little bit more than a ‘hotel’ about it, it is certainly the one.

As a Grade II listed building the Midland boasts many of the original features, stunning décor and well, rather nice carpets! Those who have worked with me and Bliss Weddings will know just what I feel about venue carpets…some of the most beautiful venues have the most dreadful, ghastly carpets.

The Ceremony and Reception suites are just dashing, brimming with character and space. The venue has many possibilities available to you in terms of layout; something which is quite rare as there is normally on just enough room for everything. On another note the lighting is just fabulous; complemented by the high ceilings and perhaps even a spot of Manchester sunshine will make it the perfect backdrop to your Wedding.

Happy New Year Everyone!

We hope you have enjoyed some much deserved time off over the festive season. We have had a wedding in between Christmas and New Year but we are feeling energised for the year ahead.

So yes, its been a little quiet on the blog front but we are pleased to say that this is simply because we have been so, soooo busy with lots of Weddings to plan. We have set a few New Years Resolutions over at BW HQ here and blogging is certainly one of them so expect to see and hear more from us in 2012.

We have some rather exciting news too. By the end of January we shall have launched Bliss Weddings Abroad. We will be working in partnership with a very successful Company who specialises in Destination Weddings across Italy, Greece, Cyprus and also New York to name a few, So, if you are looking to plan your overseas wedding then get in touch as by the end of the month we will officially be going WORLDWIDE!!! Can you tell we are excited?

On the Academy front we are adding the finishing touches to our Planning Parties as this is something which our Brides have suggested to us and would like to see- so we will keep you updated on that as we will of course have a fabulous introductory offer.

We do have other new ventures to tell you about but to encourage another blog post, we don't want to reveal all just now.

What our plans are for the rest of the year!

We thought it would be nice to give you an update as to what we are up to before the end of the year. This month we have enjoyed a little time off- still working hard at the office mind you!

From September we are busy as we have lots of weddings to plan for, lots of Brides to keep calm and also continue the plans for those who are getting married in 2012!

That being said we thought we would give you a little insight into the Weddings we are working on.

In September we are doing Weddings at Formby Hall, Tatton Park, Mere Country Club, a City Centre Manchester Hotel and also a lovely little Village Hall in High Peak for a real English affair. We have a right old mix amongst this lot- an African Romance, a Scottish and Indian celebration and a huge 300 guest and 13 Bridesmaid wedding!

As October comes we will be going to Leasowe Castle for a Wedding where the Police are getting hitched and also assisting two further couples one at the Freemasons and one at Eaves Hall.

November comes in with a bang as a wedding at Inglewood Manor on bonfire night literally does bring fireworks and fire eaters together with a black tie wedding at the lovely Beeston Manor. Last but my no means least in November we are off to the Isla Gladstone in Liverpool.

December we get to assist a few couples with their Wedding plans whilst taking some much needed time to go Christmas shopping and to hang out our Christmas Stockings.

So, there we have it! Our Diary until the end of 2011. We will do our very best to keep you updated of everything we have going on but we are super busy as you can see!

We are delighted to have been selected to assist each and every one of these couples and we are so excited about seeing everything come together on the day!

Pop the Questions: Is £15,000 enough to plan my WHOLE Wedding?

I have a wedding budget of around £15,000 and I have a ‘typical’ cost breakdown from a magazine to work off because I have no idea how much things cost.

After doing some research and getting some photography and Florist quotes it seems to be way out! I am worried I don't have a big enough budget to pay for everything.

Firstly, it is important to note that a £15,000 wedding budget is rather substantial! Some couples get married on very little and the final amount depends on the ‘Who’; ‘What’; ‘How’; and ‘When’!

Magazine budget breakdowns are tricky as the data is likely to be gathered from brides who live across the country, with varying guests numbers and also different preferences; thus should be used as a guideline only.

Similarly I think it is difficult to base your budget around a percentage. Whilst your reception (catering and drinks) will take up approx 50% of your budget all the other things need to be looked at individually, compared next to your remaining budget.

The most important thing with all your suppliers is that you should see what's important to you. Some people would rather not have a videographer, some people have someone who can make their wedding cake and some people don't require chair covers- it literally does just depend on your circumstances.

The best thing to do is for you and your partner to spend an evening discussing your ideas to establish what you want and what you don't and where to 'allocate' extra funds. Entertainment may be something which you want to spend more money on yet you may want a photographer to provide your images on a disc which is normally cheaper than an album.

From here you need to tackle each supplier seperately ensuring that you do thorough research, ensuring that you obtain at least three quotes per supplier so you have something to compare.

The most important thing to remember is to hold back at least 10% of your budget for a contingency or emergency wedding fund then IF you do spend more than you intended you will have a safety net.

All in all, each wedding and each couple are different so be creative and be original- you will be surprised how far your budget will stretch.

Diary of a Bride-to-Be: Laura!

Here is the first of yet another new feature on the Bliss Weddings Blog: Diary of a Bride-to-Be!

We will be following the journey of some of our Brides. This week we would like to introduce you to Laura who had one of our Wedding Planning Workshops.

She has very kindly taken the time to write a little something about how her and Alex got together. In the coming months we will catch up with her to find out how it is all going.

Alex and me met in August 2008 through a friend. I lived in Manchester and had just moved up to Bolton. I got a job in a pub and met some good friends, one of which kept telling me I had to meet his friend who he just knew would be perfect for me. I finally agreed and met him in a local bar (kind of a blind date). I fancied him as soon as I saw him. He was really nervous so we had a few drinks and headed in to town. I had never met anyone who I'd felt so relaxed with and after I made him laugh he ended up giving me a piggy back around town. He went to Leeds festival three weeks later and rang me declaring his love.

After that we saw each other every day and have done ever since. He has helped me through so much when my grandparents passed away and although times have not always been easy we are a really happy couple. People know us for having good parties and always joking with each other. I don't think anyone else could get me like he does!

On our 2 year anniversary we went away to Windermere with his family. Alex was adamant he wanted to go to the lake with me. We sat by a private lake taking in the view and whilst the sun set he got down on one knee and proposed. Then he took out a ring that my father had given to my mother. My dad died when I was 13 and he truly was my hero. He had been to my mum to ask for permission and she had passed on the ring to give to me. I had no idea and every time I now look down at the ring I not only think of the man I am going to spend my life with but also the man who brought me into the world and was my inspiration.

We have a house together and I have started my teaching job at a lovely school near by. Alex got a first in script writing and he is so talented at what he does. I have a big Irish family and Alex is surrounded by really close friends so it will be a big day. There will only be one thing missing on the day but I know he will be there in spirit to walk me up the aisle. I truly am blessed and know life can only keep getting better.

Our Wedding Budget: £12,000

Sticking to your budget is one of the hardest parts of planning your Wedding, how did you fair? What advice could you give to another couple?

If you shop around for stuff you really can save money. Also speak to friends I found lots of help through friends of friends.

How and why did you choose your Reception location?

I have always loved its location whenever I have driven past, when we went to look at it I knew it was THE place!!

A colour scheme is important to nearly every Bride what was yours and how did you incorporate this into your day?

Cadburys Purple. The Bridesmaids dresses were purple, the flowers had purple in them, the men’s neck wear were purple and the seat covers had purple ribbons.

Did you have a theme? How did you carry this through the day?

Yes it was farming!! My husband arrived on his tractor then we had wellies as flower centre pieces and milk churns and wheel barrows with flowers in. The cake toppers were farming themed.

One of the key suppliers on your wedding day is your photographer, how did you make your decision?

My uncle is a professional photographer so that was quite easy for me!!

Did you hire a Videographer?

No!!

Now, THE Wedding Dress one of our favourite bits of the planning….tell us all about it down to the last detail!

It was amazing!!! It was the 9^th dress I tried on in the first shop. It was so different to everything else I had tried on. It had straps that hung just on the shoulder, it was ivory, had a long train and had the most gorgeous pearl detail at the top.

Where did your Groomsmen get their formal hire?

From the local bridal shop in Hyde where I got my dress from.

Wedding Flowers, tell us about your arrangements

They were amazing they were the talk of the wedding!! One of our close friends did them for us the centre pieces for the tables were willies filled with flowers, the top table also had wellies lying down and filled with flowers. Then there were wheelbarrows and milk churns also filled with flowers in the door ways and mini wheelbarrows for the bar.

Wedding Cake, so many decisions for one cake….how did you narrow it all down?

We had 3 tiers in heart shaped, top and bottom were fruit middle was sponge (I don’t like fruit cake!) they were plain white iced with a purple ribbon round them. Then we had toppers made for each tier, the top tier was traditional then the second tier was Mark (my husband) in his wedding suit with his wellies on with his quad bike, sheep and dogs. The bottom tier had me sat on one of my horses with my other horse at the side.

Transport, did you need transport? What style did you choose?

I had a Bentley I didn’t want a classical car. Mark used the tractor!!

Did you have a Venue Dresser?

No as the venue dresses the tables, my friend put the flowers onto the tables himself, we just had someone to dress the chairs!!

Entertainment…tell us how you entertained your guests throughout the day

We just had cds playing through the meal, and had a DJ in the evening.

After all that planning where did you go on your Honeymoon?

Riviera Maya, Mexico. It was AMAZING!!

And Finally…

What did you enjoy most about planning your wedding?

All of it although designing the cake toppers was fun!!

What was the most difficult thing you had to overcome?

Dress fittings as my Mum lives two hours drive away from me and I wanted her to be there.

Is there anything you would do differently in hindsight?

Yes, I would go for a cheaper car as I felt it wasn’t really worth the money.

If you could give one piece of advice to other Brides what would it be?

This week on Honeymoon Hotspot we are featuring Egypt, a place very close to my heart as I love the history and went there 3 years ago on holiday. So, I suppose this week I can be like a travel writer….plus you get to see some of my favourite snaps.

Egypt makes a fabulous honeymoon destination and although it is said about many countries it truly does have something for everyone. So what makes Egypt different? Well….

Beauties and the Beach…

If you love your beach holidays the Red Sea is the perfect place for you. With miles of sandy beaches to take root on armed with sunscreen and a good book you will feel like you’re in the Caribbean.

Check yourself into one of the many 5* hotels in the area and take advantage of the facilities available.

We stayed in Hurghada which is next to the Red Sea...here are a couple of pictures of the hotel and the A-Mazing pool which is apparently the largest in Africa.

What lies beneath…

The Red Sea is renowned for diving and many people flock here year on year to dive amongst the coral reefs and underwater life. If your new then take a diving course and give yourself honeymoon to remember.

For the less adventurous take a trip on a glass bottom boat where you will have the opportunity to see under the sea…without getting wet.

I however, stayed firmly on the beach and here is where i got my gorgeous sun-tan.

Time Traveller’s Wife (well you will be a wife by then)…

Take a trip back in time and go on an Egyptian journey. Home to some amazing temples, tombs and ruins you can get all the culture you need from just one city!

Cairo

As soon as you say the word you can picture the pyramids and the Sphinx. Take a trip to the Cairo museum and see some of the most famous artefacts that have been discovered.

Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple are just two of the things to see in Luxor.

Aswan is a little out of the way I admit but trust me it is worth the journey….

Abu Simbel, rescued from the water and put back together on the mainland. Amazing.

Take two weeks and be go on an adventure in the first week up and down the Nile seeing all the amazing sights. Week two; spend it relaxing in Luxor by the river or on a sun-drenched beach.

Not to be missed:

You have to go on a camel ride! Whether you have done it before or not you must must must do it in Egypt, after all that’s how the Egyptians did it.

Hot air balloon ride

This is one of the best things I have ever done, it was an early morning (3am) and we travelled across the Nile at 4am in the dark in possibly crocodile infested waters. After a little health and saftety (not sure this will help high up in the air) we got in the basket and went up and up and up!!!

Watching the sun rise over the mountains, nile and surrounding areas was amazing and something I’ll never forget.

How did you get into the wonderful world of weddings?

Hello! I’m Sophie and I set up my business Cards by Sophie in 2009. I started Cards by Sophie with the intention of being more creative while I was stuck in my day job, but that’s long since gone and I’ve been full time chief at CBS HQ for nearly a year now.

Not many people know that I used to work in the construction industry, which now feels like a completely different life! I was under the threat of redundancy in early 2009 so decided to jump, and leave the hard hat and steel toe cap boots behind before I was pushed. I’ve made cards since I was very young, and thought back to my own wedding in 2007 where I found it so difficult to find something that was just as I wanted. I got married abroad and was amazed just how few companies would let you change the wording to suit that! I wanted to be able to personalise the stationery, change the colours and get the design just right for me, not to mention keep the pricing down. So I decided to create a collection that is modern and affordable for everyone.

I make wedding stationery, from save the dates and invitations to table plans, thank you cards, order of service and much more. I’m based near Manchester but send my stationery out all over the UK, and even to Europe too!

How would you describe your style?

I would definitely describe it as modern, contemporary, sleek and stylish! I like to stick to the typical wedding associations e.g. hearts, pretty things etc., but with the modern twist.

What do you love most about working within the wedding industry?

I absolutely love working for my clients, sounds clichéd I know, but I get a real thrill out of making someone’s perfect wedding stationery, and it’s even more exciting when I am asked to look at a one off bespoke design for a couple. It’s so lovely to be a part of a couple’s big day and I love it when my stationery takes pride of place at the wedding.

I’ve also met some wonderful people in the industry; we’re all there to help each other out which is great! This is particularly useful on Twitter; I’ve made so many new contacts etc., including the lovely Katie herself!

What do you dislike?

Oooh difficult question! It’s hard to think of something here, I really do enjoy every aspect. It can sometimes be tough to get yourself out there and be noticed as there is so much competition! That’s something I’m always trying to do as much as possible. I get wonderful comments once people do find me, but it’s tough with a limited marketing budget!

Your designs are fabulous, where do you find your inspiration?

I get my inspiration from everyday life, from people and things around me. I’m a perfectionist and set myself hard targets each day so that often keeps me going more than anything else! I’ve always wanted to steer away from the traditional invitation with lots of frills, lace and stick on text. Make it more modern and simple, I always think simplicity rules! I come up with designs that allow you to change certain details, such as the colour of the ribbons, Swarovski crystals or handmade paper to make sure it fits in with my client's themes.

Whose invitations would you love to design?

Difficult one, there are so many people I can think of! I guess my current couple would have to be Kate and Wills, in fact I have done a Royal wedding inspired design which has been going down a storm!

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?

There are many things that I’m proud of, I regularly get featured in wedding magazines such as Wedding Ideas Magazine, Perfect Wedding etc. It might sound a little over the top but when I come up with something new, or I get great feedback that just makes it so worthwhile.

However I think the best thing at the end of last year was that I got shortlisted for the ‘Best Stationery’ award in the Wedding Ideas Magazine awards 2011. These are awards voted for by brides and readers of the magazine! I got into the final 5 in the country, and have a posh badge to show off as a result which is on my website.

What’s your best selling design?

My best selling design is the Pearl design, that’s a design that’s been with me from the start. Current popular designs this year so far are Botanica and Chic is always a popular one too! I think people like the simplicity of the Pearl design, and you can still have your wedding colour in there with the ribbon running down the spine of the card.

What’s your personal favourite?

Very difficult to say, it changes weekly I think! It’s usually do with what I’m working on at the time. I’m about to start working on my Love design which I love (excuse the pun!) to do, but it is very fiddly. The end result is worth it in my opinion though.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I aim to continue on the same path I’ve set out already. I’m always thinking of new designs and ideas for creating that perfect wedding stationery. It’s very difficult to narrow them down sometimes to go on the website! Keep a look out at that and my FB page where I showcase a lot of the work I’m working on at that point and any offers that are coming up.

Finally, if there is one piece of advice you could give to a Bride…

In terms of stationery, it’s the first key step to setting the tone and choosing may help you decide on your flowers and other accessories. Think about the sort of clothes you love, your ideal décor, and the place where you are getting married. This will help you decide whether you’re going for something traditional or modern. What colours do you love? It could be your favourite colour, or something that reminds you of where you met your partner. Remember the stationery is the first thing your guests will see! Pick something you love and can be proud to send to friends and family, don't settle for second best.

As I final comment I would add that my one other general piece of advice is to keep in your mind that your wedding is for you and not for anyone else – the best bit of advice my Mum ever gave me!

I can't believe it is May 1st, this year is going way too fast! The sun is shining and our first wedding of the season is next Sunday at Soughton Hall.

This year is a busy year for us here is just a snapshot of what's coming up in our diary for this year so far:

Weddings:

We have weddings at Soughton Hall, Sefton Park Palm House, Inglewood Manor, Leasowe Castle, Isla Gladstone Conservatory as well as a Male Civil Partnership at the Park Hall Hotel, Chorley.

All this on top of our Weddings for 2012! So far we have 6 Weddings booked in; the Last Drop, Thornton Manor, Thornton Hall, Nunsmere Hall a Female Civil Partnership at the Village Hotel in Bury and a fabulous three day event where the couple is to marry at Tatton Park.

North West Wedding Venues: Soughton Hall

This weekend I visited Soughton Hall with a Bride who is getting married there in three weeks time. I am not sure whether it was the sunshine which made it all the more beautiful but having never been there before it is true what they say…the pictures don’t do it justice!

This Bride tells me that her and Husband-to-Be looked at a staggering 22 other venues before they decided on Soughton! That is not to say that this Bride is fussy, she clearly knows what she wants and finally she found it a Soughton Hall.

I have been assisting her for the past couple of months now and seeing the venue I think Soughton Hall is the perfect canvas for her wedding. I won’t divulge too much about the day itself but she is a designer by trade so needless to say her wedding is going to be amazing.

And it is not surprising! If you are still on the lookout for the perfect Wedding Venue go please do have a trip to Mold, the home of Soughton Hall.

In 1986 it was purchased by the Rodenhurst family who restored the Hall and its gardens to its former glory. Clearly they have done a fantastic job as it is hard to believe that the Hall was ever in a poor, unloved state.

A truly fabulous location for your wedding, the breathtaking drive down to the Hall is something quite special.

Once inside, it just gets better. There is a real sense of luxury with a country house feel. The décor is expertly done as it is modern enough to go incredibly well with many colour schemes and themes yet it still has it individuality and unique features.

What’s more there is a fantastic permanent marquee here for you to continue the party later on in the evening! It is such a fabulous and versatile space, with a large black and white dance floor and lovely seating area for tired feet. Let’s be honest New York is one those places that features high on many people’s ‘must visit’ list. For years we have been watching New York from our living rooms in films such as Sex and the City, Confessions of a Shopaholic, the Devil wears Prada together with many music videos, and TV shows. Perhaps your honeymoon is the perfect opportunity to take a trip to the big apple and see those wonderful sights for yourself.

New York is split up into 5 counties- The Bronx, New York (Manhattan), Queens, Kings (Brooklyn) and Richmond (Staten Island). This week we put Vera Wang in the spotlight!

Vera Wang is one of the most renowned names in the fashion industry. She has had what can only be described as a fabulous career, dressing and designing for the whole remit of celebrities and famous names.

A little history...

Vera Ellen Wang was born in New York, June 1949. Fast forward several years and she is appointed the role of 'Senior Fashion Editor' at Vogue (oh to be Vera!). After 16 years she moved on to Ralph Lauren to become Design Director for 2 years.

Back in 1990, Vera opened her own Bridal Boutique in New York City which is still home to her trademark dresses.

Who has worn a Vera Wang creation?

Vera has had the opportunity to design wedding gowns for many famous people such as Jennifer Lopez, Hilary Duff, Mariah Carey, Victoria Beckham, Sharon Stone and more recently Chelsea Clinton.

We can’t all afford a Vera Wang wedding gown but in more recent years we, the general public, have been able to have our own little piece of Vera to make us feel fabulous as she has expanded into jewellery, shoes, fragrance, eyewear and home items.

What’s more for all you engaged ladies out there, in 2001 she published a book “Vera Wang on Weddings” which is available from all good retailers. Have a little Vera spirit and inspiration in your Wedding Plans and purchase a copy!

How to set a realistic Budget for your wedding...

Setting your Budget

Once you have announced your engagement to your family and friends you will turn your thoughts to the wedding. Naturally you want to get stuck in and start planning everything but there are a few hurdles you have to overcome before you can do that, the most important of which is your Budget.

There are two aspects to Budgeting:

Firstly you need to outline a realistic budget
Secondly, you need to stick to it

Neither of these is an easy task but we shall look at each of these in turn and also show you ways of keeping your wedding within your budget.

Over the next 2-3 weeks you will gain a sound understanding of what you can and can’t afford and how to cut cost, not cut corners. Remember, it is the marriage that is important and you can have a fabulous wedding on a reasonably small budget.

In the UK the average cost of a wedding can fall anywhere between £15,000 and £25,000. Now this of course is taking into considerationthe country as a whole so the North West may fall to the lower end of the scale with the cost of living being somewhat cheaper.

Now, if you are still breathing you will be relieved to know that you can of course get married for much less than this, it all depends on the type of wedding you want and what you and your partner feel is more important.

Just for clarification your budget is the amount of money which you and your Husband-to-be can afford to spend on your wedding. The word afford is important here as you need to sit down together and work out your finances in relation to your time frame.

There are 4 main ways to fund your wedding:

Use your Savings
Save and pay for items as you go along
Financial help from parents/family members
Loans

Each of these 4 ways has pro’s and con’s and you need to work out which option is best for you.

So grab a pen and paper and work out what you and your partner feel is a realistic budget.

About the Maldives

A little temptation…

The Maldives can boast some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. Lined with palm trees, deep blue seas, coral reefs and white sandy beaches it makes for a secluded and romantic setting. After many months of planning your wedding, the Maldives is the perfect location to relax and begin married life.

Lying in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives lies in two rows of atolls made up of coral islands. Each atoll is made up of a coral reef encircling a lagoon and each island has its own reef encircling the island lagoon.

Surprisingly the Maldives only developed its first resort for tourists in 1972 and ever since the Maldivian people and their government have been working hard to ensure their environment is protected. Since 1995, some areas have been ‘protected regions’ to ensure that the corals and endangered marine species are not harmed.

Climate

The climate in the Maldives is fairly unchanged all year round- which is very good to know for packing! The average temperature is around 30 degrees and the sun is constant on most days.

There are two distinct seasons, the dry season is January-March (North East Monsoon) and the Wet Season from mid-May to November (South West Monsoon).

Things to do

The Maldives really does offer something for everyone! The Maldives is renowned for its underwater life so diving is the perfect opportunity to explore life under the sea. What’s more, as the area is surrounded by warm, turquoise waters there are plenty of water-sports to choose from. As always there are opportunities to explore the local area with excursions and trips so speak with your travel agent.
